Problem

Framer's product exists to provide agency.

That principle held everywhere in the business except tax, where the finance team was piecing together data across several disconnected systems and handing over agency to legacy systems that couldn’t keep up with the pace of their global growth.

- **A widening set of obligations tracked by hand:** a global-by-default business accrues obligations wherever its customers are. As Framer grew, the number of countries and US states in scope kept increasing, and tracking it sat in spreadsheets, calendars and one person's head.
- **Fragmented systems creating manual work and retroactive discovery:** calculation sat in one place, registrations and filings in another, with different vendors depending on location. Nothing connected, so their lean finance team moved data between systems and reconciled it by hand.
- **Registrations taking months and stalling expansion:** multi-jurisdiction tax registration was the most manual work in the function. A paperwork process measured in months, running outside any system Framer could see into, increasingly consumed the time of Framer’s team.
- **The need to hire additional tax staff:** fragmented tax setups require people to hold it together, and the realistic next step was a new hire whose entire job would be orchestrating the disjointed existing sales tax systems. An added fixed cost for a problem that the right tax partner could solve immediately.

Solution

Framer consolidated onto Sphere as a single platform for global indirect tax compliance, to manage the process end to end: from registrations, calculations, filing and remittances. At a glance:

**Registration, filing and remittance run end to end on one platform, so nothing sits outside a system Framer can see into.**

- Registration, calculation and filing sit in the same place, so entering a new jurisdiction is a step in a process Framer already runs rather than a separate project handed to an external provider. The team can see where each registration stands without asking anyone, and there is no data to move between systems or reconcile afterwards.

**Sales tax is calculated at the point of sale through a Stripe integration, across both self-serve and enterprise billing, with every current and future SKU tax-coded automatically so the right tax lands on the first invoice.**

- _S_phere's engineers ran an edge-case checklist with Framer's engineers before cutover, covering subscriptions, invoices, credit notes and credit grants, so tax flows correctly through Framer's own billing setup rather than a generic one. An alert fires on any product that arrives without a tax code, so a new pricing plan doesn't ship untaxed unnoticed.

**Threshold monitoring across every market that flags obligations before they are triggered, with an exposure map active in the platform.**

- Sphere flags when a registration or economic nexus threshold is coming into range, market by market, before it is triggered. Where a threshold has already been passed, Sphere sets out the options per jurisdiction, prepares whatever historical filings are required, and leaves the decision with the customer.

**Direct access to Sphere's in-house tax team in a shared Slack channel, so jurisdiction questions get answered in the flow of work rather than through a ticket queue.**

- The channel was open before the contract was signed. Credentials, step by step guides and jurisdiction-specific questions all run through it, and where something cannot be fixed immediately Framer is told that up front rather than finding out later.

> "We chose Sphere because someone there answers when I need them. The tax is right at the point of sale, not corrected after. And registrations actually get done, in a timeframe you can plan around. This gives me back time to focus on work that matters."

Results

- **The hire didn't happen:** Framer had accepted it would need someone dedicated to sales tax. However with Sphere, global sales tax compliance stayed with the same finance team of two.
- **One system instead of several:** calculation, registration, filing and remittance in one place, with no data to move between systems and no results to reconcile.
- **Tax right on the first invoice:** calculation runs at the point of sale through Stripe across both self-serve and enterprise billing, so nothing has to be corrected after the fact.
- **Exposure visible before it becomes a liability:** threshold monitoring runs across every market, so obligations surface before they are triggered rather than after.
- **Hours back on work that moves the company forward:** the time that used to go into moving data between systems and chasing registrations now goes into finance work that compounds.

### Who Sphere is built for

Framer is the clearest example of a particular kind of fast-growing company Sphere was built for: the global-by-default software business, selling self-serve and enterprise, where obligations arrive in new markets as fast as customers do. The growth is welcome, the obligation arrives unannounced, and the team holding it is small.

If that is the position you are in, and the plan on the table is to hire your way out of cross-border VAT and sales tax compliance across a growing list of countries and US states, Sphere is for you. An AI-native tax compliance platform with real tax experts behind it, so a lean team can sell into a new market without stopping to ask anyone's permission.
